Reading is like a desk with a hidden compartment. There are nuggets in the unsecured drawers, but the truly valuable items will be hidden, unbeknownst to all but the most careful of searchers. The same holds true for a book. One is able to glean information like plot events and facts, but nothing of substance. The true substance must be sought through careful reflection and introspection. My exposure to books started very early. By the age of one, I was recognizing animals from picture books, and at three years old, I started reading. After hearing good reviews, my parents purchased a program called Hooked on Phonics. The system stressed the sounds of each letter, and these were combined to make words. My mom and I worked through the program as often or as seldom as I wanted. Though I was never forced to practice my reading, I began to desire the ability to read books without assistance. So, I practiced more frequently, and eventually became proficient in reading. The ability to rea d opened new stockpiles of information to me. At times, I became enthralled with different subjects. to the library each week to check out numerous books about topics that interested me. First, it was space. I knew various things about astronauts, I could name each planet, its position from the sun, and I could define astronomical terms that my parents had never heard of. Next, I started learning about animals.
